That might sound like an overstatement, but Katawa Shoujo is one of my most replayed games and I have had it installed almost continuously since its original release. And its popularity was certainly not undeserved. This is a visual novel famously made by a ragtag group of people who banded together via internet forums, most prominently 4Chan, and decided to work and expand on a design sketch penned by a Japanese artist. The story is followed from the perspective of Hisao, a regular Japanese dude who suffers a heart attack while meeting with his crush. He is immediately hospitalized and learns that he has a rare heart condition without an available cure. His life falls apart as he is kept in the hospital for weeks, his classmates soon stop visiting, and he has to come to terms with all the medicine he must take and activities he can never do again.
Where Are the Disabilities in Visual Novels?
Although they touched briefly on the problems in this work, they spent more of their time exploring other aspects of Katawa Shoujo. This word should not be present anywhere in the game, especially when it is a game whose characters all have disabilities. Once I started playing the game, this word disappeared, because the game itself is in English, and any slurs in English seemed to be absent.
Katawa Shoujo is a bishōjo-style visual novel by Four Leaf Studios that tells the story of a young man and five young women living with varying disabilities.
The concept of a dating sim has been done to death on a number of different platforms. Particularly popular in an indie and Eastern sense, one is likely to find some variety in the genre on sites hosting games developed by independent studios or aspiring game developers such as Newgrounds. The level of interactivity is nearly nil, only requiring a steady hand of mouse-clicking and the occasional choice every so often.
The down-to-Earth sense of atmosphere, despite the circumstances of the plot, allows an approachable nature compared to other visual novels made by bigger studios. It clearly establishes the origins of the player, what the conflict becomes, and the transition which occurs because of it. Other than the health concerns, of course. While I would agree to some extent, especially after repeated playthroughs, I think it does a well enough job of setting up every scenario to make it desirable.
Even side characters hold a distinct pleasure of making the game feel more alive in hindsight. With a place like 4chan, which can be off-putting for a lot of people, a lot of assumptions can be made about the way they would treat the girls as characters. One might be surprised at the level of care and love placed into making them seem as realistic while also sexually aggressive as possible, with even an underlying moral message attached to every route.
The fresh relatability of the story, combined with the vivid flesh and bones of the pursuable girls makes the game all the more enjoyable to experience. There are some stories that blew me away with their strong structure and comfortable parlay of conflict and tenderness. Others came across as dull, overexcited, or otherwise incomplete. Of the five story arcs present, only three of them are really worth going through, which is a shame considering the impact that has on the rest of the game.
Flash dating sims
Visual novels VN have often had a bad rap of being glorified dating sims that contain hentai, or mature sexual content. However, there are many that stand out among the rest for their exceptional quality and their ability to tackle mature topics. The story revolves around Hisao Nakai, a boy who is forced to transfer to Yamaku High School, a school for the disabled, as a result of a heart condition.
Katawa Shoujo is the golden example of what a standard dating sim visual Anyway, if you like a good story, interesting and in-depth characters, piano and.
The game uses a traditional text and sprite-based visual novel model with an ADV-style text box running on the Ren’Py visual novel engine. The majority of the story takes place at the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled students, located in an unnamed city somewhere in modern, northern Japan. After a lengthy hospitalization, he is forced to transfer to a school specialized in providing education and healthcare for students with disabilities.
Over the course of the narrative, Hisao has the opportunity to come to grips with his condition and adjust to his new life. The gameplay of Katawa Shoujo is choice-based, in which the player reads through text and occasionally has the chance to respond to prompts with a variety of preset responses. The decisions made initiate possible events or dialogue within the story. Depending on the choices made by the player, the story branches into multiple forks.
Each of these paths chronicle Hisao’s deepening and eventually romantic relationship or lack thereof with one of the five main female characters; these may variously end well, badly, or neutrally. Most of the art, sound, and animation assets used in the game are original and were created for the game by a dedicated team of artists on the development forums.
These images were later filtered to match the art style of the rest of the game’s drawings. Following the release of the full game, Four Leaf Studios announced that it had no plans for its members to collaborate on any new projects. On April 29, , the team released an “Act One” preview. The complete English-language novel was released on January 4, It was announced that the French-language translation would be released July 4, as both a download and a limited-edition physical edition.

This post was updated on November 5, to improve readability and rework some awkwardly phrased sentences. Previous edits were made in to better reflect some of the changes made to the copyright policies of Fuwanovel, one of the sites mentioned in the post, as well as to include references to official releases of said games. You may have heard about anime , Japanese animation.
Along with shows such as Yu-Gi-Oh! The shows I just named are anime that have been dubbed over for an international audience. Originally, these anime come from Japan. That would be an oversimplification. The animation and visual style is just the way these shows are presented, as opposed to them being representative of something like a genre. You see, plenty of more serious anime exist — ones that tell stories about sadness, hope, happiness, overcoming adversity, and much more.
Internationally, anime has gotten more popular and mainstream, with shows like Attack on Titan doing pretty well, and finding new viewership. For instance, Little Busters! Do take care to avoid some of the unofficial and legally dubious streaming sites. Some anime shows are based on an original story, but this is not always the case. Many are based on manga or light novels.
How Empathy Makes Katawa Shoujo Worth Playing
Being a gamer can be a lonely experience. Multiplayer allows us to engage with more gamers online, and we may find ourselves playing with the same group of people daily. Meeting that special someone ends up presenting an even greater challenge. To combat this, some developers have decided to merge romance and video games.
Katawa Shoujo (かたわ少女, translated as “Cripple Girls”) is an deconstructs the more implausible and unsavory cliches associated with the Dating Sim genre.
The game takes place in the futuristic year , where mechanized robots called GEAR were created for military and used them in the sports industry and commonplace. The massive use and the popularity of the robots have built a new academy called Cenorobotics. According to the story, the protagonist finds himself transferring to ACE Academy, a school for robot studies in fictional Japan. The primary objective of the player is to locate a team who accept him, and his old generation gear to use in the tournament.
In front of advanced technologies, the research of the protagonist is hopeless. The game mixes the romance, sci-fi, and visual novel elements to offers a brilliant gameplay with hundreds of choices. Making ‘Black Heaven: A Necromantic Dating Sim’, Part 1: Concept
Or at least a demo of it. So I wanted to start off by talking about two fan letters I wrote to the creators of two games that really shaped this project. A big part of my drive to create a visual novel game came from playing Doki Doki Literature Club , which won over fans and critics despite being one of the most disturbing, twisted games in recent memory. To be honest, I felt sick playing it—it felt like it was slowly picking apart my sanity in ways I believed nothing could….
When I was done, I felt like I was looking at the whole world in a new light. For me, DDLC reignited my passion for storytelling, for games, and for creating elaborate fantasy worlds where, as Yuri might say, you can lose yourself.

Katawa Shoujo is hilarious. The rest of this review will be me explaining the joke. It was developed and released by a self-assembled group of fans of the idea of Katawa Shoujo who came together as a reaction to a sketch in a translated piece of Japanese fanwork. The sketch, by an artist who publishes fanwork under the name RAITA, posited a dating game where all the girls were disabled—two amputees, a burn survivor, a blind girl, and a deaf-mute girl.
The original idea itself was RAITA published the sketch in The idea lay dormant until some anonymous fan translated the work and posted it to 4chan in The 4chan anon community, as attracted to conceptual and intellectual perversity as they are to all perversity, went fucking berserk about the prospect of making the game real, and successive threads flooded the forum with ideas and proposals. Eventually a small group of enthusiasts broke off and started their own development forum, taking the name Four Leaf Studios, and got to work.
Now, in , five years after the game began development and 12 years after RAITA not involved with Four Leaf Studios to my knowledge published the original idea as an offhanded joke in Japan, we have a fully playable thing. Like most visual novels, the gameplay is simple branching-narrative, choose-your-own-adventure stuff. Read and look at pictures until you reach a choice, then that choice determines what happens next. The best way to handle a joke based around intellectual or conceptual perversity is to play it completely straight.
Katawa Shoujo is, in every way it can be, as respectful of its subject matter as possible.
